My Signature Cellos at Williams-Sonoma

I earned my nick-name, "Cello John" at Williams-Sonoma in New York City about this time last year for two reasons: There's another John there, who works in stock and because I started making amazing, high-end cellos. Most people thought this was a stroke of genius but I just put myself in the place of the gift receiver. Before I make any high end gift collection...I say to myself, "What would I like to
get"?

A year later, my assistant manager Joe and I have come up with a Signature Cello Catalog that we will promote to our customers this holiday season. Above are some
of our prototypes:

My personal favorite, of course is the "Baking with Martha"

You Saw Him Here First

My buddy from high school just got signed with a modeling agency and I thought I'd surprise his with his very first magazine cover. I might be the AD for business mags, but who says I can't do a little PhotoShopping here and there? =)

Oh and ladies, HE'S STRAIGHT!!

Williams-Sonoma joins forces with west elm at the 2007 NYC AIDS Walk

For the past 5 years, I have been participating in the NYC AIDS Walk. As much as I try to raise for this extremely important cause, I wanted to do more this year, MUCH MORE! I knew I had the financial backing from my Wall Street co-workers, I just needed a recognized name to get a wider audience involved. hmmm...

Besides being a designer by day, I moonlight as a part-time associate at Williams-Sonoma in mid-town Manhattan. I thought, PERFECT!! I'll combine the resources of both of my worlds in an attempt to raise as much money as possible while creating a fun bonding experience for all my friends and co-workers.

Within two weeks of initiating the team, we found ourselves joining forces with sister-store, west elm. For the next two weeks, I was busy communicating with the folks at WS corporate, sending out emails, soliciting donations, branded the team webpage and designing artwork for all the shirts. Special thanks to MikeSK Indie Revolution for their generous help with the shirts. IT WAS A HUGE SUCCESS for a first year pilot. We had 45 registered team members and raised close to $3,000 for the GMHC.

In fulfilling this mission, they remain true to our heritage by fighting homophobia and affirming the individual dignity of all gay men and lesbians.

Second Prize: Reyataz 2006 “Fight HIV Your Way” Photography Contest

Several months ago, I stepped out of my East Village apartment onto First Avenue when I saw this inspiring message ”Become Your Dream” written in chalk. My immediate thought was, “that would make an awesome greeting card”. I kept the photo on file for a while until one day I see an ad for the the Reyataz 2006 “Fight HIV Your Way” Photography Contest sponsored by Bristol-Myers Squibb.

The contest was recognizing the many ways to fight HIV with the words and images of those who do it every day. I thought this was the perfect place to present such a photo. In 50 words or less, you had to explain what the image said to you. I stated “Pursue your dreams now because just like a message written in chalk, they could be gone tomorrow. Time is one of our most precious assets.” Fortunately, I do not suffer from the virus, but being an active member of the gay community, I felt this was my way of contributing to the awareness.

My photo was chosen as one of the fifty first place winners and was featured in a traveling exhibit that kicked of at Vanderbilt Hall in Grand Central Station. This exhibit gave visitors the opportunity to experience the fight against HIV through someone else’s eyes. The exhibit then traveled to Washington, D.C., South Beach, F.L., Venice Beach, C.A. And San Francisco, C.A. The photo will be one of the 101 that were selected to be printed in a full-color, hard cover book.
